Title: Spirit Messengers
Description: I reimagined needlepointing into a completely different realm. Instead of using the traditional needle, embroidery thread and canvas; I use an exacto knife, shredded paper and perforated aluminum. I hand formed the aluminum. My pallet was a book on modern art. Selecting the shredded color plates of the book the imagery is made pixel by pixel. Using a knife I wove the shreds, repeating this process thousands of times. It's a meditative process in selecting each piece. I want the end result to create a multi-sensory experience for the viewer.

Local Bay Area Arts turns to “Book Art.” Featured in the San Francisco Chronicle this award winning artist became entranced with the idea of turning books into an alternative form of art. It feels like your are repurposing discarded books. Having studied graphic arts I like to encompass some aspect of this into my work. My art begins with the conception of an idea. I use unconventional products like PVA granules to accomplish a strengthening factor that was extremely lightweight and durable. In the fashion world “couture” means something new or not done before, I like to think of my art as “couture,” something new that evokes one’s thoughts.

This piece was inspired by the book “Endangered Species” and was made into an altered book art. The images from the book are of the endangered species from the African continent. The back side shows the region they are from. The design or shape was fashioned after the skate or mermaid purse. The skate symbolizes that there is an embryo and the hope that the species will continue.
Materials, book, steel wire, niau blanc fiber.
